1. Second Clue Given in Film Festival Contest.

A second clue in the Port Townsend Film Festival¹s "guess-the-guest"
contest may either offer clarifying information or add to the mystery .

With the first clue released last week, no one had correctly guessed the
identity of the 2004 guest who will be featured at the annual Saturday night
event called "A Very Special Evening with . . . " hosted by Robert Osborne
of the Turner Classic Movies television channel.

   The second clue reads:

Not one, but two; no dogs Spot or Petey, but rather Saxon and Suds.

The first clue, released last week, was: She is among the last of her
kind as he was among the first of his.

"We have been purposely cryptic this year, offering riddles instead of
easily-found quotations," according to Peter Simpson, director of the
festival. "Last year, we had a correct identification within half an hour of
the first clue¹s release, by someone who entered the information into an
internet search engine and quickly found the answer."

Simpson hopes the clues are more obscure this year.

The winning contestant will be selected at random from among those who
correctly identify the name of the guest by Monday, July 26. The winner will
be introduced and have his or her photograph taken with the guest at a
special reception during the festival.

Entries can be made in one of three ways:

By mail (Port Townsend Film Festival, PO Box 594, Port Townsend, WA 98368),
By email (info at ptfilmfest.com, write "Contest" in the subject line),
By hand-delivery (Port Townsend Film Festival office, Mount Baker Block, 211
Taylor St., Suite 16, second floor, at the corner of Water and Taylor Sts.

In addition to listing the name of the guest, contestants should include
their mailing address, email address (if they have one), and a daytime phone
number.

2. Video projectionists needed

A call for video projectionists has been issued for assistance during the
5th annual Port Townsend Film Festival, Sept. 24-26. Under the supervision
of Ian Hinkle, Port Townsend-based filmmaker, the projectionists will work
in the festival's video venue downtown at the Pope Marine Park building.

Peter Simpson, director of the festival, says that while the ideal
projectionist will have familiarity with one or more video projection
systems, the most important qualifications are having the ability to follow
directions along with an intuitive sense of video equipment and the calm to
prevent panic when something goes awry with the equipment. "That leaves me
out," Simpson said, professing to jittery fingers when working video
equipment.

Those interested should register online at www.ptfilmfest.com and click
on "volunteers," and fill out the "volunteer form," checking the "video
projectionist" box.

3. Frequent Flyer Miles Requested.

Got so many frequent flyer miles you don¹t know what to do with them?

We'll happily put them use to bring filmmakers to the 2004 festival,
September 24-26.

"Festivals are at their most exciting when filmmakers attend," Linda
Yakush, director of programming, says. "I don¹t quite know what the magic
is, but their attendance does add to the electricity in the air."

Films have been submitted for the 5th annual festival from throughout the
country.

"Once most movie makers were located in Hollywood and New York," Yakush
said. "Not any more. We have entries this year from Colorado, Florida,
Illinois, Massachusetts, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Washington, and
Wisconsin as well as California and New York."

"In fact, we¹re trying to arrange transportation to bring two Asian
filmmakers," she reported, "one from Bhutan, the other from China."

All on a limited budget, thus the appeal for frequent flyer miles, for
either basic transportation or upgrades.

"Some filmmakers are sufficiently established that they require first
class travel, so upgrades are very important," Yakush said.

Those interested in making the donation to the festival should call Linda
Yakush at 385-3434 or Peter Simpson, 379-1333.

Timing is important. "It takes a while to make the arrangements and
frequent flyer slots are often filled up early," Yakush said, "so the sooner
we know the easier it will be to schedule the flights."

4. Favorite Movie Moments

Kris Rudin of Spokane, Washington offers her favorite film moment(s) are
all from my all-time favorite film, To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

In no particular order, she cites:

The scene where Atticus (played by Gregory Peck) is sitting outside the jail
overnight, to protect Tom from the (inevitable) lynch mob, and Scout and Jem
and Dill show up. Scout, peruses the crowd and says, ³Hey, Mr. Cunningham²,
and proceeds to go on chatting him up about ³entailments² and the like. Her
innocence and friendliness put a human face on things, and the mob
disappears.
Atticus¹ summary to the jury. He ends with ³By God, do your duty!² gives
me chills every time.
After the trial, as Atticus leaves. All the blacks in the balcony give him a
standing ovation: ³Stand up, Scout, your father¹s passing.²
And, of course, when Scout sees Boo behind the door, and realizes who he is:
³Hey, Boo.²

Film moments just don¹t come any better!

Thanks, Kris. Readers are asked to submit their favorite movie moments
in 50 words or less, stating why it's one of your favorites. Those chosen to
be reprinted here will receive two certificates for tickets to the Rose and
the entry will appear in the next newsletter.

The final, and easiest, clue in our annual "guess-the-guest" contest will
be offered next Wednesday, July 21. Stayed connected.
