</B></FONT><BLOCKQUOTE>The program for the 5th annual 2004 Port Townsend Film Festival is now on line at <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B><www.ptfilmfest.com></B></FONT>, click on "Festival," then on "2004 Festival."A total of fifty-five film programs have been scheduled in five venues. Of those, seven are <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>feature films</B></FONT>, six are <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>documentaries</B></FONT>, six are <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>classics</B></FONT>, and twenty-three are <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>shorts</B></FONT>. Of the new films, five will have their <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>West Coast</B></FONT> or <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>Northwest premieres</B></FONT> at the five-year-old festival. Outdoor movies will be screened each night of the festival on Taylor Street. A <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>poetry reading</B></FONT> of poems about movies has been scheduled. <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>Almost-midnight movies</B></FONT> are back with a <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>costume</B></FONT> (read drag) <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>contest</B></FONT> scheduled for Saturday night. A new annual series called <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>"Formative Films: A Personal Perspective on Movies"</B></FONT> will be inaugurated. The festival has scheduled a <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>silent film with live piano accompaniment</B> </FONT>and will offer two <FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B>panel discussions</B></FONT> with filmmakers. <BR>
<FONT COLOR="#0000FF"><B> For movie geeks, it will be possible to see fifteen films in fifty-four hours.<BR>

<LI><FONT COLOR="#FF0000"><B>Robert Osborne</B></FONT>, host for Turner Classic Movies, will serve as host of "A Very Special Evening with Jane Powell" and the screening of S<I>even Brides for Seven Brothers</I>, and the documentary <I>Broadway: The Golden Age. <BR>

</I><FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>3. NPR's West Coast Live to Broadcast from Port Townsend Film Festival</B></FONT>. <BR>
<BLOCKQUOTE><FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>West Coast Live</B></FONT>, a two-hour weekly National Public Radio variety show produced and broadcast live-to-satellite Saturday mornings from San Francisco to audiences around the world, will originate from the Port Townsend Film Festival on Saturday, September 25, according to festival organizers.<BR>
Headliners from the festival, including Jane Powell, will be interviewed by <FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>host Sedge Thomson</B></FONT> from the stage at the <FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>Upstage Theatre and Restaurant</B></FONT> in downtown Port Townsend.<BR>
The show entertains and enlightens audiences with <FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>music, ideas and humor</B></FONT> from a rich mix of writers, thinkers, comedians, and musicians, drawn mostly from the Pacific Rim and the Western United States, but also from further afield "as feels right to do," according to a program spokesperson.<BR>
Over the years, program host Sedge Thomson has distinguished West Coast Live from any other show on public radio by interviewing the most <FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>original, outrageous, and thought-provoking artists</B></FONT> based on the West Coast, or stopping here awhile. Other talk radio shows emphasize legal and political experts, Sedge engages novelists, filmmakers, comedians, actors, and poets to talk about the cultural forces they are creating, and the source of their inspiration. Guests have included Pulitzer prize-winning author Michael Chabon, beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, comedian Robin Williams, SFMOMA art director David Ross, Gloria Steinem, journalist Studs Terkel, members of Monty Python, Pulitzer-prize winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein, and magicians Penn & Teller. In short, West Coast Live is a venue to hear some very good conversations. <BR>
The program broadcasts from locations that convey the culture and sounds of the West to its radio listeners, while allowing its theater audience to discover new venues. <BR>
<FONT COLOR="#008080"><B>Tickets</B></FONT> to see the live broadcast from Port Townsend are available at $12 in advance ($15 at the door) and $5 for children 12 and under. Film festival pass holders may obtain tickets at $10. <FONT COLOR="#800080"><B>4. Day Passes Now Available.<BR>
</B></FONT><BLOCKQUOTE>Film festival passes good for one day of the festival, either <FONT COLOR="#800080"><B>Saturday</B></FONT>, the 25th, or <FONT COLOR="#800080"><B>Sunday</B></FONT>, the 26th are now on sale at $90. The passes provide <FONT COLOR="#800080"><B>admission to all venues</B></FONT> on a first-come, first seated basis on the day listed on the pass.<B> <FONT COLOR="#800080">Full festival passes</FONT></B>, good for all three days of the event, including the Friday night opening dinner, are also available at $175. Individual tickets at $8 each will be available 15 minutes before each screening on a space available basis. Passholders are seated first, then individual ticket buyers. The Friday night dinner is not included in the Day Only Pass. <BR>

</B></FONT><B>5. New Lecture Series Announced<BR>
</B><BLOCKQUOTE>Six speakers of national renown will lecture in Port Townsend this fall and winter in a new humanities series that its organizers hope will become an annual contribution to the intellectual and imaginative life of Port Townsend.<BR>
The talks will range from species extinction to civil rights, from a love of books to underwater volcanoes, from Chinese scholarship to chimpanzees and cognitive neurology. Talks are scheduled at the Rose Theatre, at 1 PM, every second Sunday, October through April, excepting December. <BR>
The 2004-2005 series speakers are: <BR>
<BR>
<UL><LI><B>Peter Ward</B>, paleontologist and University of Washington earth science professor, led new research on a mass extinction that occurred 200 million years ago killing off more than fifty-percent of all species on Earth. Evidence from the extinction was gathered at sites in the Queen Charlotte Islands, off Canadašs British Columbia coast. Ward is lead author on a paper detailing the evidence, published in the journal <I>Science.</I> <B><I>October 10, 2004<BR>
</I></B></UL><BR>
<UL><LI><B>John R. Delaney</B>, marine geologist at the School of Oceanography, University of Washington, studies active submarine volcano-hydrothermal systems. After recovering a unique set of rocks with the submarine ALVIN from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in 1980, Delaney focused on establishing a permanent seafloor observatory to study submarine volcanoes.<B> <I>November 14, 2004<BR>

<UL><LI><B>Nancy Pearl</B>, former director of the Washington Center for the Book and Youth Services at Seattle Public Library, now writes, reviews books for local and national publications and speaks to library and community groups full time. She reviews books regularly on KUOW, a Seattle affiliate of National Public Radio, as well as Wisconsin and Tulsa, Okla., public radio stations. <B><I>January 9, 2005<BR>

<UL><LI><B>Promila Jayapal</B> is executive director and founder of Hate Free Zone Campaign of Washington and has been a voice for immigrant and refugee communities targeted after 9/11. Jayapal has worked for social justice for over 12 years in Africa, Asia, Latin America and in Washington. She serves on the board of Chaya, the Institute of Current World Affairs, and Hedgebrook Woman Writers Retreat<I>.</I> <B><I>February 13, 2005<BR>

<UL><LI><B>Bill Porter</B>, also known by his literary pseudonym, Red Pine, is a translator of Chinese literary and religious texts. He studied anthropology at Columbia University before moving to a Buddhist monastery in Taiwan for four years. Later, he produced 1,100 short programs of trips he took throughout China for a Hong Kong radio station. Recently he has focused on Chinašs great Zen monasteries, traveled to scores of remaining abodes of ancient Zen teachers. He lives in Port Townsend. <B><I>March 13, 2005<BR>

<UL><LI><B>William H. Calvin</B>, Ph.D., author of <I>A Brief History of the Mind: From Apes to Intellect and Beyond,</I> is affiliate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington, School of Medicine. He co-authored a study, <I>Reconciling Darwin and Chomsky with the Human Brain,</I> with Derek Bickerston. Calvinšs <I>A Brain for All Seasons</I> was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa book award for science in 2002. <B><I>April 10, 2005<BR>

The organizers, a group of local citizens including Leslie Cox, Rocky Friedman, Rick Kenney, and Peter Simpson have established an informal organization they call The School of Athens, Port Townsend Extension. The self-styled School of Athens takes its name from the Vatican fresco by Raphael. This painting depicts the ancient Greek <I>gymnasia,</I> or speakeršs forum, with all the philosophers of that period including Aristotle, Plato, Socrates, Zeno and many others. With an interest in all things, the local chapter of the School of Athens brings an array of first-rank original thinkers to Port Townsend to speak about their research, passions, and concerns. <BR>
