Friends of the Rose,
FEATURE PRESENTATIONS
SPY KIDS
Directed by Robert Rodriguez
Rated PG for action sequences. 95 min.
SPY KIDS says The Seattle Times is not only one of the best kids movies in
years, but it is funny, exciting, brilliantly directed and, heaven forbid,
educational. Antonio Banderas headlines a story about the disappearance and
search for some missing secret agents. "SPY KIDS is one of the most
wonderful, visually inventive and exciting movies I've seen in a long, long
time."-Roger Ebert. "A lively and imaginative movie with a sense of
humor."-The Los Angeles Times.
April 30, May 1 7:30
May 2, 3 4:30, 7:30
SPY KIDS is playing in the Rosebud Cinema.
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT
Directed by Richard Lester
Rated G for General Audiences. 94 min.
Nearly four decades after it rocked moviegoers, A HARD DAY'S NIGHT remains
a joyful snapshot of how the Beatles launched a pop revolution. And there's
hardly a moment that hasn't retained its antic freshness: John pinpricking
every fussbudget with a snide surreal barb; George waylaid by a
youth-market vulture; a sulky Ringo skipping out of a rehearsal and trying
to pass himself off as the bloke that he really is; the postwar Britannia
mask of Paul's grandfather ("He's veddy...clean!"). And the music! The
soundtrack marked the peak of the band's early period when they were at the
height of their collaborative creative powers and beginning to expand
musically.
P.S. While normally we request no talking during shows, no singing during
shows has never been invoked, and nor shall we request it for A HARD DAY'S
NIGHT. So if you're memory has been playing tricks on you recently, you
have five days to brush up on the lyrics to "She Loves You," "All My
Loving," "Can't Buy Me Love," and "I Love Her."
April 30-May 3 7:10
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT is playing in the Rose Theatre.
FAITHLESS
Directed by Liv Ullmann
Not Rated. For mature audiences due to language, nudity & sexuality. In
Swedish with English subtitles. 142 min.
A sensation at last year's Cannes International Film Festival where actress
Lena Endre's bravura performance was justly celebrated, FAITHLESS reunites
Liv Ullmann and Ingmar Bergman. Based on an episode in Mr. Bergman's past,
it is the story of a triangle - a grand adulterous passion and the marriage
destroyed by the infidelity. But the triangle is really a quadrangle. In a
dark corner, rarely seen but intensely felt, is the figure of a child, a
9-year-old daughter whose bafflement is the ultimate
judgement on the adults' folly. Costarring Erland Josephson. "An emotional
mystery story deepened by extraordinary performances."-The New York Times.
April 30, May 1 No shows
May 2, 3 4:00
FAITHLESS is playing in the Rose Theatre.
MEMENTO
Directed by Christopher Nolan
Rated R for violence and language. 116 min.
MEMENTO, an ingenious and hypnotic thriller, unspools the dizzy, fractured
tale of a man caught in his own private time warp. In his attempt to stop
the assailant who murdered his wife, violence has left Leonard (Guy Pearce
of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL) without any short-term memory. Unable to retain new
information for longer than a few minutes, he lives in a kind of perpetual
present time, his mind rewinding over and over in an endless loop, leaping
from now to then and back again, a movement reflected in the audacious
architecture of the movie itself. MEMENTO is a thriller with a difference:
backwards runs thing whole the, see you. "Mesmerizing
mind-bender!"-Rolling Stone.

May 5 4:30, 7:30, 9:50
May 6 4:30, 7:30
May 7, 8 7:30

HIMALAYA
Directed by Eric Valli
Not Rated. For mature audiences. In Tibetan with English subtitles. 114 min.
Nominated for an Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film, and shot in
the forbidden Dolpo region of Nepal under the most challenging of
conditions, HIMALAYA tells the story of a generational power struggle for
the leadership of a tiny mountain village played out between its proud old
chief and a headstrong young caravaner as they make their annual salt
delivery trek across the Himalayas. Director Eric Valli is also a
photographer for National Geographic and cinematographer Eric Guichard also
photographed LATCHO DROM, a hit at the Rose in '96. "A breathtaking
achievement."-Box Office Magazine.
