STEP INTO LIQUID
Directed by Dana Brown
Not rated; suitable for general audiences. 88
min. <http://www.stepintoliquid.com>

"'STEP INTO LIQUID' is such a gorgeous recording of the sport that cinemas
screening the picture would do well to sell boards at the concession
stands"-Elvis Mitchell, THE NEW YORK TIMES.

Just about every sport today seems to have its extreme dimensions. Among
the wet and wild daredevils who surf for the cameras in STEP INTO LIQUID
are some intensely balanced souls who pursue waves off the coast of Hawaii
so gigantic that the only way to approach the crashing walls of water is to
get towed into them by motorboat. Even from the safety of a movie seat,
you can just about feel the stinging hardness of the surf. Blue
crush? This is more like white smash.

STEP INTO LIQUID is a great title for a surfing documentary, and the movie,
written, edited, and directed by Dana Brown, lives up to that trippy
sensual promise. (Excerpted from ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and THE NEW YORK TIMES).

"Insanely gorgeous in hypnotic gradations of aquamarine...will send you
into a dream state"-THE NEW YORK TIMES. "Visually spectacular"-NEW YORK
DAILY NEWS. "Joyous...stunningly photographed"-PEOPLE

October 24 - 30 7:10

STEP INTO LIQUID will be opening in the Rosebud Cinema.

AMERICAN SPLENDOR
Directed by Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini
Cast: Paul Giamatti, Hope Davis, Judah Friedlander, James Urbaniak, Harvey
Pekar
Rated R for language. 101 min. <http://www.AmericanSplendorMovie.com>

AMERICAN SPLENDOR is that rarity: a true original. So is Harvey Pekar, the
Cleveland comic-book writer and file clerk who provides the movie's
inspiration. Captured form all angles, like a 360-degree mirror, he's the
year's unlikeliest hero.

In the film, a widely creative re-telling of Pekar's life, the lead
character is played by Paul Giamatti, with a perpetual scowl and the
squiggly posture of a candle snuffer. But the real Harvey turns up as
well, commenting on the action in his inimitable voice, a gargle
interrupted by a strangle. Then there's the animated Harvey, and even an
onstage Harvey in a play inspired by the "American Splendor" comic-book series.

It's windows within windows, peeking into Harvey's soul; hard to describe
yet invigorating to watch. AMERICAN SPLENDOR would be splendid enough as
an exercise in style and genre-bending, but the film's happiest surprise is
its simplest and most unexpected: It's a heartwarmer. Every performance in
AMERICAN SPLENDOR is a small masterpiece of detailed character
work. Harvey isn't one for Hollywood-happy endings, but this film provides
perhaps the year's sweetest - an unmistakable circle of love, around a
superhero without tights, but with his own real-life magic. (Excerpted
from THE SEATTLE TIMES).

"Wildly unconventional, sensationally funny, and a brilliant
achievement"-THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. "Wonderful. So far this year, no
American movie has provided such rich, unusually satisfying
flavors"-NEWSWEEK. "One of the most offbeat testimonials to the power of
love"-THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER."This one is plain brilliant"-Roger Ebert

LOST IN TRANSLATION
Directed by Sofia Coppola
Cast: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi, Anna Farris.
Rated R for sexual content and language. 102
min. <http://www.lost-in-translation.com>

She calls her exquisite study in emotional and geographical dislocation
LOST IN TRANSLATION. But much of what's astonishing about Sofia
Coppola's enthralling new movie is the precision, maturity, and
originality with which the confident young writer-director communicates so
clearly in a cinematic language all her own, conveying how it feels to find
oneself temporarily unmoored from familiar surroundings and
relationships. This is a movie about how bewilderingly, profoundly alive a
traveler can feel far from home. It's a movie that anchors Coppola as an
original artist. It's also a movie that inspires Bill Murray's greatest
work yet.

Mainstream-junk American movie star Bob Harris (Murray) meets Charlotte
(Scarlett Johansson), the young wife of a hepped-up celebrity photographer
(Giovanni Ribisi), in the elaborately luxurious Park Hyatt Hotel in
Tokyo. Sleepless in a society of elaborate courtesies and a city of
sensory stimulation, Bob and Charlotte, jet-lagged and wired, bump up
against each other in hallways and lounges. They make a connection. And
for a while, the middle-aged man unnerved by sadness and the young woman
paralyzed by possibility venture out together to explore the lunar
exoticism of a visitor's Japan - temporarily, intimately found, not lost,
in each other's company.

Coppola's characters are caught between past and future. Perhaps her
films are a kind of ongoing autobiography, but no matter. The important
point is that there's a lot up there on the screen, plenty to get lost
in. And Bill Murray turns in a great performance that, once again, gets
admirers hoping for an Oscar nomination. Maybe this time, the credit due
won't get lost in translation. (Excerpted from ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY and
THE NEW YORK TIMES).

"A class act. Bill Murray is flat out hilarious...a career
triumph"-ROLLING STONE. "Pure pleasure"-THE WALL STREET JOURNAL. "The
sublime Scarlett Johansson has matured into an actress of smashing
loveliness and subtle grace"-ROLLIING STONE.

Diaper Daze Cinema Returns November 27*

By popular demand, Diaper Daze Cinema, special matinee showings for parents
with infants, returns to the Rose Theatre next week.

Diaper Daze began three years ago after Rocky Friedman, owner of the Rose
received numerous requests from parents who were sorry to be missing new
movies on the big screen. Therefore, taking inspiration from the "crying
rooms" provided by theatres around the country, the Rose began offering the
entire theatre for crying. Parents are invited to bring their exuberant
offspring without trepidation, knowing that disruptions are absolutely
guaranteed.

Diaper Daze Cinema will take place on occasional Mondays at 1:00. The
feature will be announced in the Rose's weekly ad in the Leader, on our
movie information line (360.385.1089), on our web site
(www.rosetheatre.com), and in this weekly newsletter. Regular matinee
prices apply.

Diaper Daze Cinema is for the enjoyment of film-starved parents with
infants. As the content of the movie is often adult-oriented, these
special matinees are not appropriate for toddlers or young children.

*Diaper Daze Cinema has been well appreciated over the years, but
attendance has barely covered the operating expenses of these special
showings. Please spread the word about Diaper Daze to parents with infants
so that these screenings may continue.
